The Brooks Memorial Library and Oscar Heller are excited to announce the launch of the 1st Annual Brattleboro Miniature Masterpiece Flash Fiction Competition, a community-wide celebration of literature, human creativity, and storytelling. Writers of all ages are invited to craft original works of fiction of 50 words or fewer.
As inspiration, please enjoy this excellent miniature story by Joy Harjo, and reflect on the fact that this story, as short as it is, is actually seven words too long for our competition!
Invisible fish swim this ghost ocean now described by waves of sand, by water-worn rock. Soon the fish will learn to walk. Then humans will come ashore and paint dreams on the dying stone. Then later, much later, the ocean floor will be punctuated by Chevy trucks, carrying the dreamers’ descendants, who are going to the store.
The competition is open to all, including Brattleboro residents, non-residents, and town staff. Entries will be evaluated in three age categories (age as of Dec 7).
A panel of independent judges will evaluate submissions anonymously, with all identifying information removed to ensure fair consideration.
Winners in each age category will receive:
Stories may be submitted in-person to the circulation desk at the Brooks Memorial Library, or digitally using the following form.
